CHALI

Finally, she could feel it. Dull, placid, but there. That mattered.

Chali was going to listen to Bevan. He hadn't known her for long, but they'd had many conversations about leadership and the nature of people. And bending order. Chali clung to his last words now.

You could change the world, he'd said.

He was talking about finding this mysterious tome that might teach her to bend other elements besides Chaos. All orders. She was already the first to bend two elements that either of them knew of. What could she accomplish if could bend others? Maybe then she could teach those in Olma-Ka who struggled with Chaos another element they could manipulate more easily. The fact few could kick up a small dust devil might no longer be a worry if she could teach them how to bend Water or Air.

For the first time since her initial trip into the Dark Sands, Chali thought of things beyond the boundaries of Olma-Ka. Even the Olka-Fa desert. The Lost Spirit Forest might be the key for her and the Olmarian people.

"See? See?" Bevan said excitedly. "You're getting it. Look how long you hold it."

A fragile flame danced in her hand. Chali realized she was looking at it as a mother might her newborn babe. But as long as it held life, she wanted to look at nothing else.

This wasn't Chaos. Not even close. Fire. She was bending Fire. For the first time, she felt its heat. She called on it and it didn't fizzle away.

"Your will is strong, Chali Danos," Bevan commented hungrily. "Not much longer, and you'll have a comfortable grip on the basics."

Her flame guttered when his encouragement distracted her. "Long before I leave this world, you'll be a master of Fire. For all I know, you may create new ways."

"Is that possible with Fire?" Drulf asked from the other side of the circle of warriors.

"Very much so, I'd imagine," Bevan said. "The spells we know are passed down by our teachers and guides. Some discover them on their own, but that is rare. Chali's situation is unique. Almost like she doesn't need to be taught, but that it's already there. Inside. Waiting to be unlocked. If she's able to link what she can do with Chaos with what she can do in the future with Fire… well, I wouldn't put anything past her."

"Well, don't get carried away with your expectations," Chali said, watching the flame dance in her hand. Over the course of the night, she'd grown it to the size of a feather standing quill to tip.

Drulf's lips fluttered as he exhaled. "You've always been amazing at anything you set your mind to. All Bevan has talked about is what you're capable of and how easily you pick things up. Don't discount yourself. There are others who would love to say the same about their own abilities."

"Are you speaking of yourself?"

Drulf's gaze dropped to the glowing campfire.

"He expects himself to pick up paladin skills without training," Gaeron said, giving the large Buk Toh a light shove.
